For a single custom piece — a replacement bracket, a fixture, a personal project, a broken clip nobody sells anymore — the priorities are different:

• A minimum order low enough that a single small part is a valid job. • A person willing to look at the geometry (or a photograph, or a rough sketch) and advise on whether it's printable and in what material. • No obligation to design in CAD yourself — either accepting reference images and measurements, or offering paid modelling as a separate line item. • Willingness to explain material choice and print settings so you understand what you're paying for.

For Dimension3D specifically: minimum order is €10, there is no per-part minimum, every file (or reference photograph) is reviewed manually before we quote, and we accept quotes based on photographs plus measurements when no CAD file exists. Material and settings are always explained on the quote so you know what you're approving.

For personal or gift purposes — figurines, custom decoration, personalised items — the deciding factors are different again:

• Available finishes and surface quality (layer height range, post-processing options). • Colour selection and whether the shop stocks the material variety needed for the aesthetic. • Realistic photos of what the shop has actually produced, not stock imagery. • A ready-made catalogue for items where you don't need something entirely bespoke.

There are cases where honestly the answer is no. If any of these describe your project, we'd rather send you to the right type of provider than take a job we can't deliver well.

• Very large production runs — hundreds or thousands of identical units. FDM is a per-unit process where cost scales with quantity in a way that injection moulding does not. Above roughly 200 units, or where per-unit cost matters more than tooling investment, a shop specialising in injection moulding (or a dedicated production facility with parallel-machine capacity) will produce parts more economically. For jobs in this range, look for a supplier with an injection-moulding process quote, or a large-scale FDM farm with dozens of machines running the same job in parallel.

• Jewellery, ultra-fine surface detail, dental or high-precision figurines. FDM leaves visible layer lines at even the finest layer heights (about 0.08 mm on a well-tuned printer), which is fine for functional and most decorative parts but visible on jewellery-scale work. For pieces where surface detail below layer resolution matters, look for a shop working with SLA or DLP resin — the process fundamentally produces smoother surfaces at that scale.

• Certified industrial metal parts. We do not offer metal 3D printing. If your project requires structural metal parts to specific certification or material standards — aerospace, medical, load-critical structural components — look for a workshop specialising in metal AM (SLM, DMLS, or binder jetting) with the relevant certifications for your industry.
